From time to time we need someone to take us on the river and break down everything we know into fundamentals to iron out certain habits which are inefficient. Back to the Future focuses on how you have developed as a paddler, takes those skills and builds them to creat efficient paddling to conceive energy for those vital river moves. This is intense and be prepared for a work out. We will break down your strokes to fine details to create a text book practice paddler.

Our aim of this course is to coach you through the next steps in you paddling progression, if you feel like there is something missing or would like to create a defined set of core principles this course is for you.

In this 4 day course you will learn how to redevelop your skills and become the paddler you have always wanted to be. We will strip your skill set down and build it back to improve your paddling indefinitely for the future:

Day One (Recap and More):
We start by establishing where you are struggling, your comfort zones and what you want to develop. Get ready to sweat, from hour one you will be on your toes being pushed to your limits. 

Balance (Trim and Edge/Lean)
Accuracy and Timing (Speed and Angle)
Down River Speed
Reverse Paddling
Foundation Manoeuvres
Crossing the Current (Ferry Glides)
Breaking In and Out of Eddie
S-Turns
Linking skills in class II water

Day Two (River Running):
Class II/III River Run with a focus on pushing the develiped skills you have learned.
An all in rescue will take place lead by your instructor. 

Day Three (Knowledge Update):

More advanced moves in controlled settings

Cross Current Momentum
Reverse Paddling
Compound Manoeuvres
Introduction to Boof Strokes
Surfing

Day Four (River Running):

Final day of the course complies the past two weekends into the same day two river run incorporating all the past three days information. Bring a granola bar and eat a hearty breakfast.


DETAILS:

Duration: 28 hours of class II/III over 4 days (7 hours pers session)
Time: Sessions will run from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm (meet and leave times)
Location: Mamquam River Race Site and Lower Cheakamus River
Equipment: All kayak related equipment is provided.

River Environment: You will need to invest in proper canoeing clothing including a wetsuit, drytop or outer layer, and footwear (river shoes, neoprene booties, old runners). All other canoe related equipment is provided (canoe, paddle, PFD canoe helmet)

PREREQUISITES:

  • Able to Swim in normal paddling clothing
  • Iron Out the Kinks course or equivalent training. It is recommended you have spent time in a boat after this course to practice skills learned on the Introduction to whitewater course.
  • A first aid certificate is not a pre-requisite. However holding a first aid certificate is strongly recommended for all paddlers
