"First Time on the River" - Open Canoe
When the thrill of whitewater is calling your name, but you have no idea where to start, we have the solution. Paddling whitewater in a open canoe offers a confidence inspiring way to develop fundamental skills and challenge your basic canoe knowledge on moving water.
Do you want to become a whitewater paddler? Have no idea where to start? Maybe you have been in a canoe or kayak and need some guidance onto the river? Then the "First Time on the River" course is for you!
Our aim of this course is to coach you through the fundemental moving water skills creating a foundation from which you can build your river paddling knowledge.
In this 2 day course you will learn fundamental river running skills and information in a river setting:
Equipment and River Boats
Carrying and Lifting
Beginnings of Hazard Awareness
Grade or Class Scale l - V
Swim the River - You will get Wet!
Balance (Trim and Edge/Lean)
Accuracy and Timing (Speed and Angle)
Down River Speed
Crossing the Current (Ferry Glides)
Breaking In and Out of Eddies
An all in rescue will take place lead by your instructor.
Duration: 12 hours of class I/II over 2 days (6 hours pers session)
Time: Sessions will run from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm (meet and leave times)
Location: Mamquam River Race Site, Squamish or Chilliwack river, Chilliwack
Equipment: All canoe related equipment is provided.
River Environment: You will need to invest in proper canoeing clothing including a wetsuit, drytop or outer layer, and footwear (river shoes, neoprene booties, old runners). All other canode related equipment is provided (canoe, paddle, PFD and helmet)

- Able to Swim in normal paddling clothing
- Basics course or equivalent training
- A first aid certificate is not a pre-requisite. However holding a first aid certificate is strongly recommended for all paddlers
